Jeepers from all over China converged on Yinchuan as the meeting point for the 1st Annual Gobi Desert Safari. Yinchuan is a small city by China's standards with only a population of about 2 million. An early morning breakfast got the event rolling as we were able to meet all of the attendees and break the ice.
We then headed for the Gobi Desert in a large caravan. The desert starts about 90 minutes from Yinchuan and continues for thousands of kilometers traversing some of the most trecherous and desolate land in the world. The trip from Yinchuan to the edge of the Gobi is only about 150 km, but this route cannot be underestimated. The 'Death Highway' is one of the roughest lengths of paved highway we have ever seen. Warning signs describe the hazards of traveling over 50km/hr but as all true Jeepers know, road signs are only a suggestion. Our average speed on this highway was well over 65km/hr. As we pass into Mongolia, unrestored lengths of the Great Wall are very visible. and serve as the visual indication of the passage into the Gobi territory. Despite some major political setbacks and severe weather, the 1st Annual Traversing Gobi Desert Safari was an overwhelming success. Check out this promo video of the event, Check back later for a complete video wrap up of this incredible journey!

Day 10: Yinchuan - Gobi Preparations
The original agenda for the Gobi Desert Safari was to travel through the Gobi Desert with the final destination of the North Everest Base Camp. The Chinese Government has made some modifications to the current permits and visas and have cancelled all travel into Tibet for the current time.
An alternate expedition is being developed - you will have to stay tuned and see where we end up!

Check out these teaser photos from our pre-run of the desert:

Day 9: Yinchuan - Dealer Visit
Our trip to Yinchuan has been quite the event. Our plane flight was delayed by about 4 hours, getting us into the airport at 2am. We were up early to get over to the dealership and start prepping the vehicles for our journey. Several vehicles needed to be aligned. Dennis spent time to cover the finer points of a proper lifted 4wd alignment.
These guys drive their vehicles everywhere everyday, so high mileage JKs are very common. As a result regular maintenance is critical in these extreme conditions, as is ECU diagnostics. There was a JK brought in with fuel delivery problems. The techs were able to diagnose, and repair the fuel pump within a few hours. These guys really know their stuff!
We will be heading out for the actual Gobi Desert Safari tomorrow - so be sure to stay tuned for all of the action!

Day 7: Beijing - Dealer Visit & Video
Today is our last day here in Beijing. We were able to put together a quick video about the upcoming Gobi Desert Safari. It was a hot one today - it felt like it was 100 degrees with 100% humidity, but probably was a little less than that. Either way a nice cold popsicle was perfect!

Day 6: Beijing - Dealer Visit
In Beijing we have had the pleasure of visiting Traversing Beijing, one of the premier franchise operations in China. They are performing the final preparations for the trek to Yinchuan (1,200 km) on several vehicles, including a TeraFlex LCG longarm JK with a diesel engine.

Day 4: ShenMu - Dealer Visit & Wheeling
Well its 6pm here and we still need to finish the long arm and alignment so it will probably be a late one. Tomorrow we are going to the desert to test the lift kit out. That should be fun, nothing like a wheelin trip to make my day.

I finally got under the Jeep they were working on and checked out the lift. These guys install the product like they have been working on Jeeps their whole life! Excellent work guys!
